چکیده

We study the scaling behaviour of thin martensitic films. Specifically we consider an elastic energy with two SO(3) invariant wells which are strongly incompatible in the sense of Matos and Šverák, but whose two-dimensional projections are compatible. We show that in a thin film of thickness the energy per unit height scales like h. This scaling lies in between the classical membrane theory (where the energy per unit height is of order 1) and the Kirchhoff bending theory, which corresponds to a scaling of h.

Influence of aging temperature on phase transformation and mechanical behavior of NiTi thin films deposited by magnetron sputtering technique

In this study, NiTi thin films were deposited on the glass and NaCl substrates by means of magnetron sputtering method. The influence of aging temperature, over the range 300-500 oC, on phase transformation and mechanical properties of the sputtered NiTi thin films were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and nano-indentation assay, respectively. The DSC curves showed that the ag...

A Finite Element Model for Martensitic Thin Films

A finite element approximation of the thin film limit for a sharp interface bulk energy for martensitic crystals is given. The energy density models the softening of the elastic modulus controlling the low-energy path from the cubic to the tetragonal lattice, the loss of stability of the tetragonal phase at high temperatures and the loss of stability of the cubic phase at low temperatures, and ...

Asymptotic modeling of thin curved martensitic films

We consider a thin curved film made of a martensitic material. The behavior of the film is governed by a free energy composed of a bulk energy term and an interfacial energy term. We show that the minimizers of the free energy converge to the minimizers of an energy depending on a two-dimensional deformation and one Cosserat vector field when the thickness of the curved film goes to zero. using...

Interfaces and Free Boundaries, 4 : 2002, 71-88 A TOTAL-VARIATION SURFACE ENERGY MODEL FOR THIN FILMS OF MARTENSITIC CRYSTALS

Martensitic thin films have applications in actuators, sensors, and micromachines because of their large work output/(cycle · volume) [22]. Single-crystal martensitic thin films have recently been grown in the laboratory [12] and theoretically offer even larger work output/(cycle · volume) [5]. Bhattacharya and James [5] have rigorously derived a thin film variational principle from the three-d...

Investigation of resistive switching in anodized titanium dioxide thin films

In this work, TiO2 nanostructures were grown on titanium thin films by electrochemical anodizing method. The bipolar resistive switching effect has been observed in Pt/TiO2/Ti device. Resistive switching characteristics indicated the TiO2 nanotubes are one of the potential materials for nonvolatile memory applications.  Increasing anodizing duration will increase nanotube lengths which itself c...
